The film “Slovo House. Unfinished Novel”

The film “Slovo House. Unfinished Novel” has already been presented in Estonia, but given the fact that it has been in wide release in Ukraine for the last three months, we decided to introduce it to an even larger audience! The film has recently been submitted for consideration as Ukraine’s entry for the Academy Awards! The Ukrainian Oscar Committee will decide Ukraine’s nominee for the Academy Awards on September 9th. The full-scale war of Russia against Ukraine, which is happening now, had its beginnings with the “Slovo” building in Kharkiv – it was the first trial for the Ukrainian nation. The film tells the dramatic story of Ukrainian writers, poets, and directors who created in the 1920s-30s. By Stalin’s order, they were gathered under the roof of the cooperative “Slovo” building to be forced to work for the benefit of the system.
This building held enormous significance for Ukrainian culture, but Stalin’s machine operated with extraordinary cynicism. They all became participants in an experiment to form a new type of Soviet writer and to have complete control over the creative process. Most of those who refused to cooperate with the Soviet authorities were destroyed. The film is about how the communist paradise turns into a communist hell. The story is based on real events. The film has won numerous awards and prizes at six international film festivals. Duration: 120 minutes
